TVKC Ice Breaker Race Weekend Report

The TVKC Ice Breaker at PFI proved to be a weekend of highs, challenges, and invaluable growth for James Kell. From mechanical setbacks to career-best performances, the event showcased both resilience and potential. Let’s dive into the action!

Friday Practice

The weekend didn’t start as planned, with engine issues sidelining us for the first three practice sessions. However, the team worked tirelessly to get the kart back on track. Our first session was cut short by a loose bumper, but by the final session, everything came together. James put in a solid performance, finding good pace and setting the stage for a stronger Saturday. Thankfully, the Rooster kit kept us warm and dry through the bitterly cold and wet conditions, ensuring we could focus on the job at hand. Don’t forget, you can get your own gear at Rooster Sailing with the code KELL10 for a discount.

Saturday Practice

Saturday brought a clean slate, and James hit the ground running with four practice sessions that went as smooth as clockwork. The TB chassis shone through as James consistently found himself swapping positions in and out of the top five. Lap by lap, confidence grew, and the kart felt dialled in. The progress made during the day was nothing short of inspiring!

Qualifying

When the lights went green for qualifying, chaos ensued as drivers scrambled to stake their positions. James, however, played it smart, hanging back to set up the perfect three-lap average. The icy track made grip a luxury, with drivers skating on slick tyres. But the TB chassis delivered when it mattered, giving James the edge to qualify P4 overall – his best qualifying position to date.

This was a standout moment, reflecting hard work and determination paying off in a big way.

Pre-Final

Starting P4, James had a great launch, quickly moving into P3 on a tricky wet track. He stayed glued to the rear bumper of P2 before making a clean overtake to take the spot. While the leader opened up a seemingly uncatchable 30-second gap, James focused on maintaining his rhythm and delivered a stellar P2 finish. It was a composed and confident drive, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure.

Final

The final race promised excitement, with James starting P2 on the front row. The pressure was palpable, and a jump start penalty loomed over the race. Despite the inside row’s poor start, James found himself in P3 by the end of the first lap. Determined to pull away from the chasing pack and minimise the penalty’s impact, James pushed to the limit. However, a slight miscalculation on braking sent him off track, bending the axle and ending his race prematurely with a DNF.

Weekend Highlights and Lessons

While the final race didn’t go to plan, the weekend was brimming with positives. From overcoming early mechanical challenges to achieving a personal best in qualifying, James showed remarkable progress and potential. Every session brought valuable lessons that will fuel stronger performances in the future.

The TVKC Ice Breaker was a weekend of growth, grit, and glimpses of greatness. We’ll be back stronger for the next event – stay tuned for updates and follow the journey as we continue to push forward!
